Zan News: Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that the main goal of the third Doha meeting is the full integration of Afghanistan into the international community and the country's adherence to international commitments, especially concerning human rights and the rights of women and girls.
The third meeting of special representatives from various countries on Afghanistan is scheduled to take place next week in Doha. Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, will preside over this meeting.
In a press briefing on Tuesday (June 25), Dujarric mentioned that the meeting will discuss how to advance international engagement on Afghanistan in a more coherent, coordinated, and structured manner.
Dujarric added that the Doha meeting will also provide a platform for direct dialogue between special representatives of various countries on Afghanistan and the Taliban. According to him, representatives from around 30 countries and international organizations will be present at the meeting.
Dujarric stated that on July 2 in Doha, Ms. DiCarlo and the special envoys are scheduled to meet with representatives of Afghan civil society, including human rights organizations and women's rights advocates.
He emphasized that these discussions are part of an ongoing process with the ultimate goal of achieving peace in Afghanistan, ensuring the country's integration into the international community, and meeting international commitments, particularly regarding the rights of women and girls.
Meanwhile, Ms. DiCarlo noted that the Doha meetings will address the multiple challenges faced by the people of Afghanistan and provide an opportunity to explore ways for more principled engagement with the Taliban for the benefit of all Afghans.
It is noteworthy that a Taliban delegation led by the group's spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, is expected to participate in the Doha meeting.
This comes amid widespread criticism over the exclusion of women and civil society representatives from the main Doha meeting. Women's rights activists are calling for a boycott of the meeting.
