A Mother Commits Suicide in Badakhshan in Protest Against Forced Marriage of her Daughter to a Taliban Member

Local sources in Badakhshan report that this woman ended her life by ingesting poison in front of the Taliban member on Friday (August 2) in the village of "Shahran," Khash district.

Sources added that a Taliban member had forcibly betrothed the woman's 19-year-old daughter a few months ago. Despite the strong opposition from her and other family members, preparations for the wedding were underway.

According to the sources, the daughter had also attempted suicide several times.

Sources stated that the Taliban member had threatened the girl's family with "punishment" if they filed a complaint against him.

So far, local Taliban officials in Badakhshan have not commented on the matter.

It is noteworthy that since the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, multiple reports have surfaced of Taliban forces forcibly marrying young girls.
