Afghanistan Saffron Union: Over 50,000 Women Are Employed in Saffron Processing in Herat

Zan News: Syed Abdul Wahed Sadat, Deputy of the Afghanistan Saffron Union, states that 85% of saffron processing in the country is carried out by women. He adds that currently, between 50,000 to 60,000 women are employed in saffron processing in Herat province.
The Bakhtar news agency, under Taliban control, reports, quoting the Afghanistan Saffron Union, that over 50,000 women are involved in Afghanistan's saffron industry.
Meanwhile, the Taliban had previously announced that after the ban on opium poppy cultivation, saffron farming has increased in 26 provinces of Afghanistan. According to the Taliban Ministry of Industry and Commerce, last year, 67 tons of saffron worth $49 million were exported to nine countries.
Additionally, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) had announced that it secured a large order for 600 kilograms of Afghan saffron at the 2024 Paris exhibition. The annual value of this order reaches $1.07 million.
Furthermore, the International Institute of "Taste" in Belgium, after laboratory tests, named Herat saffron as the best in flavor, awarding it first place.
