Afghanistan Women's Cricket Team's First International Match After Leaving the Country
January 30, 2025
Zan News
Zan News: For the first time since leaving Afghanistan, the Afghanistan women's cricket team participated in a T20 match in Melbourne, Australia. The team played against Women's Cricket Without Borders and was ultimately defeated.
The Embassy of Afghanistan in Australia stated that the match was organized with the support of Cricket Australia, the Australian government, and cricket enthusiasts.
The competition took place on Thursday (January 30) according to Australian time and was attended by the Afghan ambassador and Australian officials.
In an official statement, the Afghan embassy in Australia described the event as remarkable and commendable, emphasizing: "Holding this cricket match outside Afghanistan echoes the strong voice of Afghan girls and women in their fight against Talibanism and rejects an identity that has been imposed on Afghanistan under the guise of foreign and non-Islamic culture."
It is worth mentioning that after the Taliban took control, women's sports were banned in Afghanistan. Many female athletes, including members of the national cricket team, have either been forced to abandon their sports careers or leave the country.
In addition to sports restrictions, the Taliban have also banned education and employment for women and girls—an action that has sparked widespread international reactions.
