Rina Amiri: Patience with the Taliban is Running Out

Zan News: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Human Rights and Women in Afghanistan, discussed support for Afghan girls and women in education with Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE's Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs.

On Wednesday (September 4th), Amiri posted a message on her X (formerly Twitter) account stating that the UAE and Washington remain committed to supporting girls and women in Afghanistan.

In this conversation, both sides agreed to support Afghan girls and children in education, health, and entrepreneurship.

At the same time, the U.S. Special Envoy emphasized in another message that Washington's support for the Afghan people remains steadfast, but their patience with the Taliban is running out.

She added that she raised her concerns about the Taliban's new law on the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice in meetings with officials from Qatar and the UAE.

Amiri clarified, "My message was clear: our support for the Afghan people remains, but patience with the Taliban is running out. The path to domestic and international legitimacy lies in respecting the rights of the people of this country."

Rina Amiri did not specify whom she raised her concerns with in Qatar and the UAE.

It is worth noting that the Taliban's new law even considers the sound of women’s voices as "awrah" (something that must be covered).

Previously, UNAMA, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, described this law as a "disturbing vision for Afghanistan's future." UN experts also considered the Taliban's new law as indicative of a "serious setback" for human rights in Afghanistan.
