Rina Amiri: Taliban Are Intensifying Their Extreme Policies of the 1990s
August 24, 2024
Zan News
Zan News: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Women and Girls, stated that the Taliban's ban on Richard Bennett's visit to Afghanistan and the enactment of the new law on the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice indicate that Taliban are doubling down on the extreme policies they imposed in the 1990s.
Amiri wrote on X (formerly Twitter) last night (August 23) that maintaining the international community's current stance against the Taliban is a "normative, economic, and security necessity" and that the international community should not normalize relations with the Taliban unless there is a significant improvement in their behavior regarding human rights.
These remarks come after the Taliban banned Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, from visiting the country and accused him of propaganda against them. Meanwhile, Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, has ratified into law the "Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" law.
This law consists of a preamble, 4 chapters, and 35 articles, with Article 13 dedicated to provisions related to women's hijab, including severe restrictions on women's dress and behavior.
