Zan News: Mitra Mehran and Wahida Amiri, two Afghan women's rights activists, called for the recognition of gender apartheid in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan during a session of the US Congress Human Rights Commission.

The US Congress Human Rights Commission held a session on Tuesday (July 30) focusing on the situation of Afghan women. The session was also attended by Rina Amiri, the US Special Representative for Afghan Women, and Heather Barr, the head of the women's rights division at Human Rights Watch.

In the session, women's rights activists highlighted the harassment of Afghan women under Taliban rule and urged the US Congress Human Rights Commission to recognize gender apartheid as a "crime against humanity."

They emphasized that the Taliban benefit from US financial aid and called for an immediate cessation of these funds.

Heather Barr stated during the session, "Women in Afghanistan are living under a system of gender apartheid, and the world must act to recognize this phenomenon."

It is worth noting that since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, the group has issued more than 50 restrictive decrees on women's lives, including bans on education, employment, and presence in public spaces.
