Child Killed in Unexploded Mortar Blast in Maidan Wardak

An unexploded mortar shell detonated in Chak district of Maidan Wardak province, killing one child and injuring four others.
The incident took place on Saturday, August 23, in the village of Koz Khawat.
According to the Taliban’s Disaster Management Authority, the explosion occurred as the children were returning home from school.
Health sources confirmed that the injured were taken to medical centers, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Afghanistan remains one of the most vulnerable countries to mines and unexploded ordnance. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, in 2024 alone at least 564 people in the country have lost their lives in such explosions, 434 of them children.
