The Taliban’s disaster management authority has announced that at least 20 people have died following heavy rainfall and flooding in Parun, the capital of Nuristan, and several other areas of the province.

The authority said on Monday (20 July) that, according to preliminary figures, more than 80 people were injured and over 100 others remain missing. It said the number of casualties could change and rise.

Local Taliban officials said the floods had also caused widespread loss of life and property damage.

In recent months, parts of Afghanistan have experienced severe flooding, damaging homes, agricultural land and infrastructure and affecting large numbers of residents.
