The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that two women were flogged publicly in Darzab district of Jawzjan province.
According to the court, the women were punished on charges of “extramarital relations” and “running away from home.”
In a statement released by the Taliban Supreme Court on Tuesday (24 June), each of the women was sentenced to 39 lashes and three years in prison.
It is worth noting that although the Taliban enforce such punishments based on their own interpretation of Sharia, human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that carrying out punishments such as public flogging and execution violates human dignity and contradicts international human rights obligations.
