Young Man Killed Near Taliban Police Headquarters in Herat

Local sources in Herat report that a young man named Mohammad Noman, son of Abdul Rahman Moradi and a member of the family of Haji Arbab Shir Khan Alizai, a former member of the Herat Provincial Council, has been killed near the Taliban police headquarters in the province.
According to the sources, Mohammad Noman was killed today, Monday (10 August), while passing near the entrance to the Taliban police headquarters in Herat.
No official details have yet been released about how the incident occurred or the identity of the person or persons responsible.
Residents of Herat say that such an incident occurring near one of the Taliban’s main security centres has increased their concerns about the security situation in the city.
Some residents of the province say the Taliban have repeatedly claimed to have ensured security across Afghanistan since taking power, but concerns about killings, theft, kidnapping and other crimes remain part of people’s daily lives.
According to Herat residents, security is not limited to the absence of war, and citizens should feel safe in markets, on roads, at workplaces and even near government centres.
Local sources have called for the circumstances of the incident to be clarified and for the person or persons responsible to be identified. They say the victim’s family and the public have the right to know what happened and what steps the responsible authorities have taken to identify those responsible.
Some Herat residents are asking how security can be ensured in other parts of the city if a citizen can be killed near a security centre.
Taliban officials have so far provided no official explanation regarding the killing of Mohammad Noman or the details of the incident.
The incident comes as security and the level of protection afforded to citizens remain among the concerns raised by people in parts of Afghanistan.
