Announcement of Regional Countries’ Readiness to Assist After Deadly Earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan

After the deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan that claimed hundreds of lives, several regional countries have announced their readiness to help the victims.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday (September 1) that the country will provide its assistance based on Afghanistan’s needs and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, also expressed sorrow over the tragedy in a post on X and wrote that India is ready to deliver all possible humanitarian and relief assistance to the victims.
Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan, also extended his condolences in a message on X to the “people and brotherly government of Afghanistan” and wrote: “Our hearts are with the families and communities affected by this tragedy.”
Meanwhile, a 6-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s eastern provinces last night. The Taliban have announced that at least 800 people were killed in Kunar and 12 in Nangarhar. According to their figures, 2,500 were injured in Kunar, 255 in Nangarhar, 58 in Laghman, and 4 in Nuristan. The Taliban have said these figures are preliminary and may rise further.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, said that in some areas victims are still trapped under rubble and rescue operations face serious challenges due to destroyed roads. He added that the injured are currently being evacuated by helicopter and called on citizens to help the victims with shelter, food, and clothing.
