Murtaza Solangi, spokesperson for Pakistan’s president, has criticised the Taliban’s restrictions on Afghan women and girls, saying the group has confined half of the country’s population to their homes and deprived them of education, work and fundamental freedoms.

Solangi criticised the Taliban’s policies towards women in a post on X on Thursday (24 September), sharing photographs of Afghan women.

In separate remarks, he also accused the Taliban of repressing ethnic and religious minorities, saying the group is attempting to divert attention from Afghanistan’s internal problems by escalating tensions with Pakistan.

His criticism comes five years after the Taliban returned to power, with Afghan girls still barred from education beyond the sixth grade and women prohibited from attending universities and working in many sectors.

Solangi also warned that Pakistan would not back down in the face of what he described as provocative actions by the Taliban. He said continued confrontation with Pakistan would create further problems for the group.

His remarks coincide with renewed Pakistani strikes on Kandahar, Paktia and Khost. The Taliban say four civilians were killed in the attacks. Pakistan has also announced that it targeted 10 locations in response to drone attacks launched from Afghan territory.
