Saida Mirziyoyeva: Viewing Afghanistan Solely as a Threat Is Not a Solution to Its Problems

Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of Uzbekistan’s Presidential Administration, stressed in her speech at the United Nations that the international community must not leave the Afghan people alone to face their problems. She said viewing Afghanistan solely as a source of threats is not a solution to the country’s problems.
Speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday (23 September), Mirziyoyeva said that the people of Afghanistan, from different ethnic backgrounds, must have hope and opportunities to achieve peaceful lives.
Referring to regional cooperation, she said Central Asian countries have sought to develop their relations through cooperation and partnership rather than viewing one another as threats. According to her, Uzbekistan is pursuing the same approach towards Afghanistan.
Her remarks come after Uzbekistan’s President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, also called last year for joint international efforts to support the Afghan people and prevent the country’s isolation.
However, in the section of her speech concerning Afghanistan, Saida Mirziyoyeva made no specific reference to the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s and girls’ education and employment.
