Rabab Fatima, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, has reaffirmed the organisation’s continued support for the people of Afghanistan, saying the United Nations is committed to upholding human dignity, creating opportunities and improving the lives of Afghans.

In a video message on Saturday (24 October), marking the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Fatima said Afghanistan’s future belongs to its people and that the UN will continue to stand by them.

Referring to Afghanistan’s membership in the United Nations since 1946, she said the organisation has supported the Afghan people through periods of war, drought, displacement and humanitarian crises.

The UNAMA chief also praised women and men, young people, community elders, teachers, healthcare workers and aid workers who continue to serve people despite difficult circumstances.

Referring to the challenges facing Afghanistan, Fatima said the talents, aspirations and potential of the Afghan people go beyond the difficulties they currently face.

She also stressed that, as she begins her mission in Afghanistan, she is committed to listening to the views of the Afghan people and working with them.

The message was released several days after Fatima officially began her mission in Kabul. UNAMA announced on 18 October that she had assumed leadership of the mission.
